View Full Version : X Box area at i-14?

I'm trying to get MPUK to set up an X Box area at i-14 with LAN connections. I think they will need proof it would be a good idea though. So get voting...

Whoever voted No.
Why?
Give reasons please. Cheers.

i would have said yes because its a good idea,(im the 2nd no vote) but then u had to start digging at the ps2, and by the way, by the time i14 is here the ps2 will be broadband compatable (with online services before xbox online is live) and therefore i assume networkable.

I HAD to have a dig at the PS2 :)
What happened to inter console rivalry?
You know SEGA vs Nintendo style.

I voted yes but...

I've said it before and i'll say it again. The only reason to sort out an XBOX network at i-series would be if there was an exclusive game (ie, that isn't available on PC) that is amazing and would warrent all the hassle. At the moment the ONLY game that meets those requirements is Halo. You then have to ask yourself, is it really worth while just for one game?

I voted yes because it would be nice and if it did happen then i would bring mine, but it's alot of hassle.

But most people go to the i-series for one game.
CS, TFC, Quake 3 etc.
So it'd be similar just on consoles.

I'm as much of a fan of the xbox as anyone but i also like the PS2.

Since buying my xbox i've been shocked at the lack of good exclusive games - i don't want to play an xbox game that i can get on the PC.

The PS2 has LOADS.

Come on MS, pull your finger out!

Come on... give em time.
They have only just started in comparison to Sony.
There is always a spurt of games on the consoles release then a quiet period then the games come again.
By the looks of it the games start coming again by this October.
Exclusives like Blinx look awesome and should hopefully boost the X Box.

I think it would cool to have an xbox area, but not dedicated. As there are only a few games that are multiplayer.

You'd need to have a PC, and an Xbox.

Dwarf_Pr0n

And get MPUK to charge the same as they would for a lap top connection?

Jazza
19th August 2002, 14:29
That would depend on if you wanted to play on the XBOX and still read IRC, etc. Otherwise, just move the cable other to the XBox.

Would also depend on how you hookup your kit. If you connect you XB to your video in, on your vid card, then you could, play Halo and keep up with IRC, but would need 2 net connections.

Or, as in my case, your display has a S-VIDEO conector, then you could only use XB or PC, so would only need the supplied RJ45 connector :) Same would be true with the XB VGA kit

At i10 it was nice to have a go on the Xboxes for several reasons:

a) A break from sitting at a PC
b) Novelty value of the xbox
c) Different games

Me and my mates enjoyed a few short xbox games, but that was about it. If you're saying 'is it nice to have xboxes around?' then the answer from me is 'Yes, it's nice'.

If you're asking 'is it worth multiplay paying for some xboxes to be present' then I'd probably say 'Not really, it doesn't bother me that much'.

Since the novelty will have worn off, I wouldn't expect there to be nearly half as much use as before.

I've now actually *read* the thread properly, you're not talking about consoleless pe0ns are you?

Unreal is a launch title for Live, so probably won't be released here until they lauch Live in the UK, which hopefully will be this year.

X-Box networking is simplified for Simpletons, as such it would not be possible AFAIK to simply have your X-Box on your desk.

A separate area would need to be provided solely for X-Box players - as such it would be costly to bring both PC and X-Box, and possibly boring to only bring X-Box.

If there was enough demand ( > 16 people ) then you'd probably have fun, and you'd probably also create sufficient demand for MPUK to provide the area + service to you. I suggest if anyone is serious about bringing an X-Box for multiplayer gaming, you email wizzo@multiplay.co.uk for more details.

what about for an extra 25 may be they could run a second connection to your desk that is connected to a deadicated xbox network

Dwarf_Pr0n

Charge whatever MPUK do for a lap top connection.
Just find out in advance what people will be bringing X Box and run a dedicated X Box cable to that point.

afty
21st August 2002, 09:02
But it costs more for MPUK to run that conncetion.

A laptop connection is a 10 foot cat5 from the switch under your desk.

For X-Box connections, another switch is required, considerably longer (therefore costlier cabling), more peoples time is spent administrating it (working out the seats, troubleshooting etc.) laying it out, and the trunks of cables tied to the ceilings etc. would be much MUCH thicker and therefore require more safety measures.

It just ain't that simple.

Dwarf_Pr0n
21st August 2002, 09:05
Sure it is... Just seat all console players in a similar area with the seating plan. Thus less cabling required.

Blood Sport
21st August 2002, 21:26
come on say i had to pay 25 extra for an xbox connection and 16 other people as well

£400 extra to run the cable and if they were placed in the FPS section and then together in that ....well

Dwarf_Pr0n
21st August 2002, 21:44
I'm sure £25 extra per X Box would cover cable costs easily.
And I'm sure MPUK have a hub knocking about somewhere they can spare.

Idylla
28th August 2002, 23:11
or seat everyone back to back on two rows of tables (ie so that they are on the same switch.)

I presume from my knowledge of networking that they could therefore easily play games against each other by moving the cable from their pc to the xbox (local switch only) and then moving it back to their pc for the whole of the lan.

However if there were more than one switch's worth of XBOX gamers then you are going to get problems.

Dwarf_Pr0n
29th August 2002, 13:47
If MPUK include an XBox option at i-14 then I'll give them free coverage on my new site www.xboxaddicts.co.uk (http://www.xboxaddicts.co.uk/) which is starting to come along nicely :)

I'm not 100% sure here, but I have a sneaky feeling that there's an issue with networking the XBox. At i10 when we had the XBox stand, there were 2 networks of 4 machines. I "believe" this was due to a problem with the maximum number of machines that can talk to each other.

as I said, I'm not sure, so if I am wrong, don't shoot me.

Dwarf_Pr0n
2nd September 2002, 09:20
No that problem with 2 networks of 4 machines was not a problem.
The issue there was the fact that 4 machines were PAL and 4 were NTSC.
Bungie have created Halo so that NTSC and PAL games can not talk to eachother due to reasons I posted HERE (http://forums.multiplay.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10579) where by they changed the ports NTSC and PAL games used to stop them connecting for that mentioned reason.
The maximum number of XBoxes that can talk to each other is 16 I believe and at the moment that means PAL only and NTSC only.

I voted no because the Xbox stand at i10 sucked big time if you were sitting next to it.

Those stupid blow up large condom lookalike pieces of 'look at our fancy stand' rubbish got on everyones nerves.

Some people couldnt even here the games through their head phones it was that loud.

And I dont know about you lot, but the Halo main menu music on repeat for 3 days was crap. Esp the people who went over and turned it up when playin on it and then left it that level when they walked away.

Grrr... Pfft to gay-box

Jazza

I think you've missed the point. This is about having a section where people can bring there own XBox, not about having the sponsored stand again. They would have there own headphones, just like everyone else.

hmm yes another well thought out answer. Did you even read the post? or did u just see the word 'x-box' and felt the need to slag it off?

Im not slagging off the xbox im slagging off the gay xbox stand!

if people are gunna have their own head phones and bring their own consoles then fine, just make sure microsoft dont try to invade with the crap noisey advertising.

Im sorry if i came across wrong in the above post i was just going off on one :D hehe :P

fair enough, the stand was probably really bad - i don't know i wasn't there. The console itself, however, is a very capable machine and deserves credit imh :)

Dwarf_Pr0n
11th September 2002, 11:56
The stand at i-10 was fine... I just think NekroS has a problem with speakers rather than the console.
The speakers should have been set at a limit and kept there, yes people kept going and turning it up for some reason but thats no reason to hate the console.

so then anymore news on this xbox area?

Hypothetically would it be possible to use the Xbox tunnel software that Gamespy use to network Xboxes over the internet on the lan?

Admittedly I am not in the least bit technically minded with regards to networking and there is pobably a good reason why it is not possible.

However given that the tunnel software allows online play with an Xbox over a broadband connection via a networked PC, could it work and thus avoid the need for dedicated cabling/switches/areas/etc..?
