Can anyone sugest a good free or cheap SMTP / POP3 email server (preferably with IMAP, LDAP, and Webmail).

I`m currently running with Winroutes Internal mail server, but this doesnt offer the functionality i would like.

Idealy, MS Exchange 2000 "lite" would be what i want...

But i dont know if you can get such a thing, and its not gonna be free..

It should have a nice user interface too if possible... so all you *nix zealots out there can shut up right away :p:

So, any ideas...

a quick search on http://www.imap.org/products/database.php revealed no free (as in beer) imap servers for windows of any flavour, but many many comercial ones. You could port a unix one I suppose or buy one if you want it that bad

Why not a unix solution? Ive been using the university of washington's imap daemon for ages now on my lan, and its solid as rock with sendmail as my mta

and vi and /etc/sendmail.cf beats any gui :-)

MDaemon (http://www.mdaemon.com) is a good one... we use it on the MPUK mailserver ;)

I hate sendmail... I use postfix, and courier-imap for pop3 and imap :]

Because as i already stated, i`m using winroute.. this is a windows app..

I dont want to change this as it does everything i want it to do as a FW / Router / Proxy.

I just want a better mail server.

If i go for a *nix solution, then i need a *nix box and i dont want another box.

I dont need an Internet MAIL service...

i just want a server that i can manage myself...

I found one now anyway... its quite good..

http://www.icewarp.com/Products/Merak_Email_Server_Software/

only problem is it doesnt collect e-mail via pop3 (i have a few accounts that need that sort of collection...)

any idea of a way to forward pop3 to a smtp server ?

maybe a little app that can sit in the middle.. ?

mdaemon = baaaad

works but eats a crap load of ram and is painfully bitchy sometimes.

May or may not be appropiate, but vpop3 (http://www.pscs.co.uk/products/vpop3/) is a pretty good little app.

Iver sorted the POP3 collection with the ICEWarp mail server now so i think i`ll go with that... its fairly lightweight, and does pretty much what i need.
