This is from an article atThe Accelerator (http://www.redherring.com/insider/2002/0719/playstation071902.html)

The PlayStation 3 could conquer the home-entertainment and computing markets--if the chip inside it can deliver 1,000-fold processing improvements.

1,000-fold increase on processor improvements by 2004 (PS3's estimated release date)
Yeah right... Dream on Sony.
It'd be totally against Moore's Law of processors

The observation made in 1965 by Gordon Moore, co-founder of Intel, that the number of transistors per square inch on integrated circuits had doubled every year since the integrated circuit was invented. Moore predicted that this trend would continue for the foreseeable future. In subsequent years, the pace slowed down a bit, but data density has doubled approximately every 18 months, and this is the current definition of Moore's Law, which Moore himself has blessed. Most experts, including Moore himself, expect Moore's Law to hold for at least another two decades.

actualy they plan do deliver this via a huge grid computer style thing... quite intesting but I dobut it will work well in home entertainment area

Also they are planning to make it Internet only so you don't buy games on disc.
If they do that then they aren't gonna sell that well in the UK since our broadband coverage is poor to say the least.

but all the major parts of the uk's major cities have broadband so thats quite a large chunk of the population have access to it. if they can afford it. (or indeed require it)

it just seems to be a large proportion of MPUK forum peeps that live in isolated dwellings in the deepest darkest corners of the land.

To my knowledge, Sony and teaming up with IBM to make this processor called 'The Cell', and here is some info about it:

The processor's design is still under wraps, but the companies say Cell's capabilities will allow it to deliver one trillion calculations per second (teraflop) or more of floating-point calculations. With integer math, it will have the ability to do more than 1 teraflop, roughly 100 times more than a single Pentium 4 chip running at 2.5GHz.

They should start making it at the end of 2004. They are also making thier own operating system for the PS3, not like windowsCE (DC) or some simple version of windows (i'm sure the XBox runs on a cut down version of Win2K).

This has NOT been confirmde my Sony. But still, thats a LOT of power :-).

Still gonna flop if it's online only.

If they released it this year, then I'd agree, but they are saying it won't be out until after 2005, so by then, things could have changed.

With the PS2, XBox & GC all going online, it could help the take up of broadband. So by the time the PS3 comes out, the broadband landscape could have changed so much, that it's not a problem.

Bill Gates is putting millions of dollars into getting more broad band around the US for X Box Live.
Good old Bill.

moores law would apply if they were talking about just one processing unit. the ps2 itself has more than one processing unit and the ps3 will be another parrallell computer. I bet they could get 1000 percent improvement by 2004 if their smart with the solder.

I think there also thinking up distributed schemes where by online game load is spread arround the next in a peer to peer fashion and then you've always got the possibilitie of being able to hook up to some extra processing power that sony provides on-line...

The PS2 broadband adapter will be out early next year at the earliest. The European version of this adapter will not support 56K (IFAIK).

I wouldn't expect any real model pics yet (only concept stuff), they haven't even put out pics for their portable system which is due out before it.

Can i ask where you got your info?
